Hydraulic modelling of Athabasca Vallis, Mars
نویسندگان
چکیده
Palaeohydraulic modelling is presented for Athabasca Vallis, the youngest known catastrophic flood channel on Mars. This modelling incorporates three significant advantages over previous modelling of Martian channels: a step -backwater hydraulic model; more accurate topography; and improved flood height indicators. The maximum modelled palaeodischarge is between 1 × 10 and 2 × 10 m s 1 depending on the friction coefficient selected. An anomalously high palaeostage indicator suggests a region of ponded backwater in the channel in which streamlined forms were created through deposition, with the additional possibility of post-flood subsidence/lowering of the channel slope due to magma extrusion.

Temporary Ponding of Floodwater in Athabasca Vallis, Mars
Introduction: Athabasca Vallis (Fig. 1) is the youngest known outflow channel on Mars, dated by crater counting at 2-8 Ma [1,2]. In-channel geomor-phic features indicative of flooding include streamlined forms, longitudinal lineations, and transverse dunes [1,2]. The streamlined forms have been hypothesized to be primarily depositional, i.e. composed of sediment deposited out of the floodwater ...
متن کاملThe Layered Upper Crust of Mars: an Update on Mgs Moc Observations after Two Mars Years in the Mapping Orbit
Introduction: The upper crust of Mars is layered and geologically diverse. Burial and exhumation complicate the use of impact craters to determine the age of materials. Since September 1997, we have employed the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) to test hypotheses regarding the nature of the layered crust [1, 2]. Here we summarize key observations and update earlier findings,...

Introduction: During the Viking era, Mars' recent climatic history was held to be cold and dry with little evidence for long-lived liquid water near the surface; signs of a past wetter, warmer climate were confined to ancient Noachian or Hesperian-aged terrains. However, data from recent Mars missions have revealed contemporary near-surface water-ice to be abundant at high latitudes [1, 2], and...
متن کاملA 2.5d Hydraulic Model for Floods in Athabasca Valles, Mars
Introduction: The role of past and present water is the current focus of the Mars Exploration Program. Athabasca Valles is widely considered to be the site of the most recent major aqueous floods on Mars [1-5]. However, the previous models used to investigate the hydraulics of this flood had significant limitations. The goal of this project is to modify and apply a cutting-edge hydraulic model ...
متن کاملFormation of outflow channels on Mars: Testing the origin of Reull Vallis in Hesperia Planum by large-scale lava-ice interactions and top-down melting
The Reull Vallis outflow channel is a segmented system of fluvial valleys which originates from the volcanic plains of the Hesperia Planum region of Mars. Explanation of the formation of the Reull Vallis outflow channel by canonical catastrophic groundwater release models faces difficulties with generating sufficient hydraulic head, requiring unreasonably high aquifer permeability, and from lim...
